I told him that I would create a new play and perform it every Friday assembly, and that he needed to give me a space to rehearse in during break times. And so i decided to approach the head master of my school and strike a deal (I was 7 at this point). And also, I was getting into a lot of fights during breaks. My parents took me to a panto when I was 6 years old and I remember telling my mother that I was “going to do this, I was going to be onstage.” Then a combination of things happened - an older friend at school created a play and performed it at assembly, which made me question why I wasn’t do this. ![]() And with Dandypunk and Darin Basile on Heartcorps: Riders of the Storyboard, which recently featured as part of 2017 Sundance Film Festival (although it is a theatrical piece). Like all revolutions, it’s suffered false starts and backslides. There were battles to fight and preconceptions to shake before we could get to where we finally are: in a world where women (like Tina Fey, or, whether you like them or not, Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler) can be smart, attractive, sexually confident - and most of all, flat-out funny. ![]() The Sixties saw the appearance of smart, edgy comediennes (Elaine May, Lily Tomlin), and the women’s movement brought a new wave of radicals: the women of SNL, tough-ass stand-ups, and a more independent breed on TV (Mary Tyler Moore and her sisters). ![]() Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller emerged as America’s favorite frustrated ladies the joke was always on them. We start in the 1950s, when comic success meant ridiculing and de-sexualizing yourself. In We Killed, Yael Kohen assembles America’s most prominent comediennes (and the writers, producers, nightclub owners, and colleagues who revolved around them) to piece together the revolution that happened to (and by) women in American comedy. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Tales from the hinterland![]() ![]() Releasing in multiple Parts over the course of a 12-month campaign, TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY includes both paid updates for those who own the Expansion Pass, and free updates for anyone who owns THE LONG DARK (or SURVIVAL EDITION). Now we have The Sweetness of Water, the sweeping first novel by Nathan Harris, a 29-year-old based in Texas. The Good Lord Bird by James McBride followed an escaped slave in the years leading up to the war. Sebastian Barry’s Days Without End told of a gay couple fighting in first the Indian wars, then the civil war. Only recently have novelists sought to uncover stories that step outside this dominant narrative mode. ![]() The subgenre of historical fiction about the American civil war is generally a slightly macho, fusty one, with accuracy privileged over narrative, drawn-out battle scenes over emotional complexity, and a focus on the lives of red-blooded, white-skinned men (and the women who love them) drowning out the experience of others. ![]() T he civil war has a central place in American literary history, featuring in novels that achieved global success – think Cold Mountain and Gone With the Wind – and others that were hits in their native land but didn’t translate (Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels, EL Doctorow’s The March and The Black Flower by Howard Bahr, to name just a few). ![]() |
